About The Outdoor Classroom

The Outdoor Classroom was a project led entirely by a team of local primary school teachers in 2008. Our aim was to share best practice by detailing a comprehensive list of opportunities in the island that could be used by practitioners to enhance their curriculum with outdoor learning experiences.

Jersey is an island rich in so many ways. It has so much to offer our children; the waterfront development, our coastlines, our woodlands, our town & local villages, the people and communities. Focussing mainly on visits for the primary sector, it is hoped that this new platform will allow the project to grow, through sharing practice, and incorporate not only other sectors, but also Beach & Forest Schools, off-island visits and the use of school grounds.

The aim of this site is to provide teachers with a directory of places that can be visited, or lessons that can be undertaken within your school grounds, with classes of children.

Inclusion on this site does not mean that we advocate their use without staff carrying out a full risk assessment prior to their visit.

Guidelines for this can be found within the Risk Assessment folder. Exemplars are available in some instances and it is advised that these are used as a guide to help practitioners write their own.
